In 2010, Glenn Hubbuch returned to design our spacious “Grand Chapel” with European alter-cove, high multi-leveled ceiling, and Frank Lloyd Wright “outside/inside” temperament.  Steve Heine/Cranium Glass completed the window treatment with jeweled glass layers that show  changing colors in the changing light of day.

The Grand Chapel will seat over 175 people comfortably.  We say that it is chosen by “big loving families!”

Our Ratterman & Sons mission statement continues to stand the test of time:  “To provide a way for every family to physically gather together in the presence of their prepared loved one, so that they might celebrate a life-well-lived at a cost they find pleasingly affordable.” J.B. Ratterman & Sons Portland/Downtown is owned and operated by Emmett A. “Tony” Ratterman Jr.

Its proud tradition of serving Louisville families since 1864 has also had
James A. Ratterman, Emmett A. Ratterman Sr., Oscar S. Ratterman,
Phillip J. Ratterman and John B. Ratterman Sr. at the helm as Funeral Director/Embalmer/Owner.

Our West Market Street home stands as Louisville’s first funeral home whose entire first floor level was dedicated to the use of neighborhood  families for gathering together and being present with one another at lifes most difficult time.  The remodeling plan to accomplish this was done in 1929 by John B. Ratterman Sr.
and his eldest son Phillip.

In 1950 Emmett and Oscar Ratterman added the large east parlor, ample
to be used by three families simultaneously.  In the 1980s Jim and Tony Ratterman enlarged the raised, landscaped parking lot to accommodate
all parking needs on the premises.

Ratterman & Sons Southwest was built in 1974 as a branch location from the original Ratterman/Portland Funeral Home.  It was co-designed by Emmett Ratterman Sr., Owner, Cornelius Hubbuch, Interior Designer,  and Glenn Hubbuch, Architect;  with oversight by Larry Melillo, Architect.  James A., and Emmett  A. “Tony” Ratterman Jr. served as junior advisors.  Its  Frank Lloyd Wright prairie style architecture and outside/inside living spaces made it the unique Louisville funeral home of its time.
